UKRI Open Access Policy - changes for PIs and researchers

The new UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Open Access Policy came into effect on Friday 1 April 2022 and the UKRI has written to all affected Principal Investigators (PIs) about the new mandatory responsibilities on PIs.

The new requirements mean that all peer-reviewed original research, reviews and conference articles in a journal, publishing platform or proceeding with an ISSN, which are submitted for publication from now on and acknowledge funding from UKRI or any of its councils, must be made open access when published.

Action for researchers: Secure on Submission

All UKRI funded researchers are advised to:

  • Use the Journal Checker Tool, which provides guidance on whether the publication of choice may be compliant with the new policy, and the routes to publication available

  • Use the rights retention text on all eligible submissions to a publisher. This will ensure that you can always remain compliant via the green/self-archiving route

More information and guidance is available via Open Access Oxford, the UKRI’s guidance for researchers  and UKRI briefing workshops are running weekly during April via iSkills.
