The AXA Research Fund is inviting bids for new AXA Chairs.
An AXA Chair will be a full-time academic position, which will foster a step change in the career of the appointed professor. Awards will be 200,000 Euro per year for five years. There is a two-stage AXA application process: initial Expressions of Interest (deadline 10 October 2024); followed by full applications (deadline 21 November 2024).
Awards will support projects “with the potential to transform the considered research field” in certain eligible topic areas, which broadly relate to risk in areas of health, climate and environment and socioeconomics. A full list of eligible topics can be found in section 2 of the application guidelines - only projects in these areas will be considered for funding.
The Oxford host department/faculty is required to create a permanent full-time position for the AXA Chair, and to contribute to the Chair’s general funding during the award, “through studentships, post-doctoral support and material resources related to the research program”. Details of this support will be provided by institutions as part of the full application. The AXA Research Fund will not fund overheads or infrastructure costs.
Candidates must be of the highest calibre, and be at least 10 years from their PhD defence date at the time of application.
Each institution can put forward one candidate for the scheme. Therefore, Research Services will run a coordinated process to select the application to put forward.
Candidates wishing to be considered for the scheme should obtain the support of a hosting department or faculty. Their hosting department or faculty will submit an internal application on behalf of the candidate, by providing the following documents to srd.team@admin.ox.ac.uk
- Candidate CV (maximum 3 pages)
- Research programme details: title, area (Health, environment, or Socioeconomics) and project descriptions (3000 characters, including spaces). Please refer to the scheme’s evaluation criteria (section 5 of the application guidelines) when writing this description.
- Confirmation via email that the hosting department will create a permanent full-time position for the AXA Chair, and will therefore fund the Chair’s salary beyond the period of the award, and provide the necessary financial support during the award.
The deadline for internal applications is 12.00pm on Tuesday 1 October 2024.
Oxford’s application will be submitted to AXA by Research Services. The successful applicant must be able to finalise the above information for submission to Research Services by 9 October 2024
