Burma visiting scholars

With generous philanthropic funding from the Blakey Foundation, the University will be able to support approximately two visits by Burmese researchers to Oxford in the 2017–18 academic year. The scheme is designed to provide an opportunity to deepen our research and teaching relationships in Burma/Myanmar, and to provide specific training or other assistance that cannot easily be provided in-country.

The fund looks to support two sorts of visit:

  • longer visits that support the overall development of a Burmese partner
  • shorter visits supporting a specific individual initiative

Applications to the fund should be made by the Oxford academic who wishes to host the visiting scholar. The hosting academic must take ultimate responsibility for the application, the scholar’s time in Oxford, and providing feedback after the conclusion of the visit.

Summary information on the fund is given below, but for full details please refer to the guidance notes:

Applications are accepted on a termly basis. Applicants should email their completed application forms to the International Engagement Office.

The application form should be completed by the hosting Oxford academic, but include a statement of aims and brief CV for the proposed visiting scholar.

When a hosting academic makes a successful proposal, they will receive a single block grant. They will then be responsible for disbursing this money to the visiting scholar and making payments in Oxford as appropriate to ensure the visit goes ahead successfully.

The visiting scholar grant is designed to fund travel and travel-related expenses, as well as accommodation and other living costs in Oxford. It will not reimburse the visiting scholar’s salary to their usual employer.

Oxford academics who receive grants to host visiting scholars from Burma will be expected to ensure a written report on the activities carried out by the scholar is completed. Reports should pay particular attention to identifying areas where ongoing assistance is needed and where future collaboration may be advanced.

Visiting scholars and hosting academics will also be expected, within reason, to make themselves available for meetings and other events with board members of the Blakey Foundation while in Oxford.
