The 2023 round of Leverhulme International Professorships is now open with a deadline of 22 November 2023.
The scheme is for universities seeking to recruit excellent research leaders of any nationality, currently working outside the UK, in order to fill strategically important positions in this country. Awards are for a period of five years. The Leverhulme Trust has confirmed that the 2023 round will be the final call for the scheme.
It is expected that hosting universities will offer:
- a permanent appointment to the professorial candidate and, where possible, to staff appointed on the grant
- an ongoing package of support after the end of the grant
Each UK university is permitted to make only one bid. Therefore, a cross-divisional internal selection panel will select Oxford’s bid, via an internal process (see below).
How to apply (internal application and selection process)
The deadline for internal applications is 4pm on Monday 2nd October 2023. Applications must be sent to Catriona Hopton (Strategic Research Development Team, Research Services), and must include the following documents:
- A statement from the hosting faculty/department about how the appointment meets strategic need, and its significance more generally in the UK context (up to 5 pages*). Statements should include a summary of the particular qualities of the candidates who will fill the professorship, and explain why it is strategic to bring the candidate to the UK, and how their strategic interests align with those of the University.
- An indication of the budget in a simple table. No X5 is required at this stage. See Leverhulme’s application guidance for eligible costs.
- The candidate's current CV
- A statement from the candidate about how the appointment is important and interesting to them and how they expect the post will contribute to their career development and that of their team. Brief details of any key staff who will be involved and their planned contribution should also be included (up to 3 pages*).

The internal selection outcome will be notified in the week commencing 16 October 2023.
