MRC Impact Prize

The Medical Research Council (MRC) has announced the 2023 round of the MRC Impact Prize, which recognises individuals and teams who have made outstanding impacts on practice, environment, culture or capacity in medical research. Three prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Open Science Impact – for individuals or teams who have demonstrated transformative or innovative ideas that are advancing open research practices by making research methods, findings and outputs more accessible, transparent and reproducible
  • Outstanding team Impact – for diverse teams - spanning different disciplines, career stages and roles - that have made a major impact in medical research
  • Early Career Impact – for early career individuals or teams who have developed and implemented pioneering approaches to support future scientific advances, for example by improving research culture and environment. There are no strict eligibility criteria for ‘early career’ in this context, but nominees should be able to clearly demonstrate that their skills and experience at the time of application match the MRC definitions for either the ‘exploration (early postdoctoral)’ career stage or the ‘transition to independence’ career stage

The Prizes are worth up to £20,000 each which must be spent on advancing the impact or furthering the learning and development of the nominee(s).

Nominees must be (or have been) supported by the MRC or the Medical Research Foundation.

Oxford can only submit two nominations per category. At least one nomination per category must be for people who are from the following under-represented groups, whether they are nominated as individuals or as members of a team:

  • Women
  • Those with a disability
  • Members of minority ethnic groups

Oxford will run an internal selection process to choose the nominations to put forward. Nominees are invited to submit an expression of interest via IRAMS.

Please note that only one expression of interest should be submitted per team nomination.

Expressions of interest must be submitted in IRAMS no later than 12 noon on Thursday 1st June 2023.

Following review of the internal applications, Oxford’s chosen nominees will be notified on 8 June 2023.

Successful nominees must then submit their completed MRC nomination form and letter(s) of support to MSD by 23 June 2023. These will be reviewed and submitted on behalf of the Head of Division by the  MRC’s deadline (30 June 2023). The Lead Applicant for each nomination must also coordinate online submission of their own and their team’s individual Nominee Details forms to MRC by 30 June.

Further information about the MRC Impact Prize and the requirements for each of the categories can be found on the scheme webpage
