The call for applications for NIHR Research Professorships is now open. The objective of these awards is to promote effective translation of research and to strengthen research leadership at the highest academic levels. The Professorships enable the awardee to spend a fixed 5 year period dedicated to translational research at Professorial level and develop research capacity to accelerate transfer of research ideas into improved health.
Each award is expected to be £1.5m – £2m, consisting of a package to support a professorship, one doctoral and two postdoctoral appointments, research running costs, a travel fund, a leadership and development programme, including access to the NIHR Leadership Programme, the opportunity to request a sabbatical and the basic salary costs of the individual plus indirect costs for the University. Successful nominees will be expected to start their award in October, November or December 2020.
Institutions are restricted to two applications for the NIHR Research Professorship and one application for the NIHR Global Health Research Professorship. Therefore a co-ordinated bids process will take place to select Oxford’s applicants.
Those wishing to apply must prepare a two-page expression of interest that contains the following:
- plain English summary of the research (max 500 words)
- description of the proposed project
- training and development summary, outlining your existing skills and opportunities to support your personal and professional development as a research leader, and how you intend to develop research capacity in the next generation of researchers (max 500 words)
- whether you believe your project to be within the remit of the Global Health Research Professorship (ie research which aims to specifically and primarily benefit individuals in countries on the OECD DAC list)
This EOI must be combined with a short CV into one PDF and submitted via IRAMS by noon on Wednesday 16 October 2019.
Institutional nominees identified by the University’s internal competition will proceed to NIHR’s preliminary application stage with a deadline of 20 November 2019, allowing sufficient time for University and NHS sign-off.
