Sir Jules Thorn Trust – Research Infrastructure Fund 2024

The University of Oxford has been invited to submit one application for the Sir Jules Thorn Research Infrastructure Fund. This Fund was launched in 2022 to support capital investment that will accelerate internationally competitive research in UK universities and/or NHS organisations. Applications may address any discipline or disease area but must demonstrate that the investment will translate into improvements in healthcare for patients. It is anticipated that awards will typically be in the range of £150K-£500K.

Applications may be to fund research equipment or facilities in their entirety, or for a contribution towards the funding of a larger project. Priority will be given to projects where the Sir Jules Thorn Trust’s support has the potential to make a significant and distinctive contribution to accelerating research.

The Applicant may be at any stage of their research career but must have sufficient track record to demonstrate their ability to deliver the project
Further details about the scheme can be found here.

Those wishing to apply must submit an expression of interest via IRAMS by 12 noon on Thursday 18th January 2024. The expression of interest should consist of the following documents, combined into a single PDF for upload:

  • No more than 2 pages of A4 summarising the proposed research. You must include:
    • Description of what equipment or other infrastructure/facility will be purchased with an award from the Sir Jules Thorn Trust
    • Description of how the new equipment/facility will enable research that will translate into improvements in healthcare for patients
    • How the project relates to Oxford's research strategy and what other equipment/facilities are available to complement the requested items
    • How the host department will support the maintenance and future development of the equipment or facilities funded by the award.
    • Description of any applications for this same equipment/facility that are currently awaiting an outcome with an external funder (e.g. MRC Equip, BBSRC ALERT)
  • A one-page CV for the principal investigator, including key publications.

The successful nominee will co-develop their preliminary application to the Sir Jules Thorn Trust with the Translational Research Office and submit directly to the Trust by Thursday 29th February 2024. If long-listed by the Trust, you must then submit a Full Application in August 2024.
