UKRI have announced Round 2 of their flagship Turing AI World-Leading Researcher Fellowships: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/turing-ai-world-leading-researcher-fellowships-round-two/
This call is a strategic investment to support world-leading researchers who will undertake ambitious and novel research in AI, covering those wishing to conduct research into AI at a fundamental or theoretical level, or those working at the interface between AI and another discipline. The aim should be to deliver an ambitious, world-leading research programme that will advance the field of AI; proposals based on applying current AI methods to an application area will not be accepted.
These are senior fellowships and the case will need to be made based on recruiting or retaining individuals with a high international standing in AI who can make an impact on the UK AI research and innovation landscape. A strong package of support from the host department will be essential.
Oxford successfully secured two of the four fellowships funded in round 1: https://www.mpls.ox.ac.uk/latest/news/global-leaders-named-as-turing-ai-world-leading-researcher-fellows
The scheme has a limit of two applicants per institution and so an internal selection process will need to be run via a two stage process:
- Expression of interest (Deadline – Thursday 21 April, 12noon)
- Please email research@mpls.ox.ac.uk stating your intent to submit an application to the internal prioritisation process. This includes departments intending to recruit candidates from outside Oxford through the World-Leading Researcher fellowship.
- No documentation/application is required for this stage.
- Internal review application (Deadline – Thursday 12 May, 12 noon)
- Candidates should submit the following documents as a single PDF to research@mpls.ox.ac.uk
- Case for support (up to two sides of A4)
- CV (two sides of A4)
- Justification of resources (one side of A4)
Proposals will be considered by a panel of senior academics.
