High resolution episcopic microscopy (OHREM) is the best technology for producing histological-quality 3D morphology from any tissue sample. This is a fully-automated system where plastic-embedded samples are sectioned, with a high resolution image of the block face taken after each section is removed. This produces a stack of perfectly-aligned, undistorted images. These data can be computationally processed to create volume-rendered 3D images, or virtually sectioned in any plane. This gives it a substantial advantage over both other 3D imaging techniques and legacy histological techniques. The 3D datasets can also be segmented for accurate quantitation of the volume of any sub-structure. |
