Oxford welcomes ECRs for one-week autumn school on open and responsible research

The University of Oxford hosted the 6th annual Oxford-Berlin School on Open and  Responsible Research, 20-24 November 2023 in the Weston Library. Over 50 doctoral candidates and early career researchers took part, from the University of Oxford, Oxford Brookes, the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité University, and other countries around the world including Brazil, Australia, Vietnam, Ghana, and across Europe. Attendees spanned a variety of disciplines, including medical, life and social sciences, but also humanities and quantitative sciences.

The week-long event aimed to train researchers in how to undertake open and responsible research practices, as well as how to advocate for and become open research leaders in their teams and disciplines. It also served as a venue for attendees to meet other like-minded researchers similarly passionate about these topics. These events have always been popular and oversubscribed, which shows the strength of the movement toward improving research practice in the 21st century.

Attendees took in a full week of lectures and workshops on topics including (but not limited to) FAIR data management, science communication and engagement, copyright and publishing, reproducibility, peer review, research culture, and technical skills such as sharing code or preregistering studies.

There was also time for social activities, including a pub evening at the local Rickety Press, organised by Reproducible Research Oxford (RROx). RROx is the local network of UKRN, the UK Reproducibility Network, at the University of Oxford.

The Oxford|Berlin school on open and responsible research was established collaboratively in 2018 by Laura Fortunato (School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography; Lead for Research Culture (UKRN) and Institutional Lead for the UK Reproducibility Network) and Ulf Töelch (QUEST Centre for Responsible Research, Berlin Institute of Health).

Most of the lectures were recorded and are openly available to view in our repository. All other openly-shared materials (slides, etc.) from the lectures and workshops are available on this page as well. Please have a look!
