UKRI-NIHR Research Hubs: Realising the health co-benefits of the transition to net zero

UKRI has announced funding for a set of transdisciplinary research hubs.

The hubs will be funded by UKRI and NIHR. £6 million can be requested (80% FTE) for each hub, over a period of five years.

The hubs will provide policy-relevant evidence and deliver high impact solutions-focused research and innovation. Their overarching goal is to realise the health co-benefits of the UK’s transition to net zero, in order to protect and promote the physical and mental health of the UK population.

Further information, including a list of the hubs’ objectives, can be found on the funder webpage

The hubs will be in five UK-focused challenge areas. Applicants will address one primary area in their applications:

  • Indoor environments in a net zero world
  • Transportation and the built environment
  • Sustainable healthy diets
  • Extreme weather
  • Decarbonising health and social care pathways

Expressions of interest must be submitted to UKRI by 14 November 2023

The Expression of Interest (EoI) stage is mandatory. You must submit an EoI to UKRI by completing the template available on the funder’s webpage and emailing it to netzerohealth@ukri.org.  EoIs will not be formally assessed by UKRI unless there is a high response.

Individual PIs can only apply to lead one hub, but may be involved in other applications as part of the research team. There is no institutional application cap.

UKRI will hold a webinar on 5 October at 3.00pm to provide more information about the funding opportunity, and a chance to ask questions. Registration is via the funder webpage

So that Oxford’s response is as strong as possible, you are encouraged to collaborate with others working in the same challenge area, and to submit one EoI between you. Ideally, Oxford will only submit one EoI per challenge area (five EoIs in total).

To help Research Services keep track of EoIs and to be prepared to support full applications, please contact Catriona Hopton (catriona.hopton@admin.ox.ac.uk) if you are interested in leading or participating in an EoI. Catriona will also be able to put you in touch with others who have expressed interest in this call.

Before submitting an EoI, please ensure that you secure the full support of your hosting department(s).
