As part of preparations for the REF, the University is required to develop a Code of Practice that describes in detail how we will conduct processes around the identification of volume-contributing contracts and the selection of outputs for submission. Once agreed, the Code will be submitted to the REF funding bodies for their approval.
We are holding a University-wide Code of Practice consultation from early July to mid-September. There will be opportunities to find out more about REF, ask questions and to provide feedback. We would like to hear from a diverse range of voices, and hope that you will be able to join us at one of our online or in-person sessions.
Please see the sections below for more detail.
What does the Code of Practice cover?
Processes around the identification of volume-contributing contracts and the selection of outputs for submission. In REF volume is the measure of research activity in a subject area, expressed as a total FTE, which determines how much material we need to submit in the assessment, and is a factor in the calculation of mainstream QR funding alongside REF results. Outputs is the broader term used in REF for publications (journal articles, books, chapters) which also encompasses other products of research effectively shared, such as datasets, software, artefacts, reports, translations, exhibitions etc. Outputs are the largest component within the REF submission, which will also comprise impact case studies and narrative statements.
